• We are a fully licensed family day care in the beautiful Historic Irvington neighborhood of Portland.
• We care for maximum of 6 children.
• The minimum age is 1.5 years up to 5 years.
• We speak, sing and read German. All of our families are very supportive about giving their children the gift of a second or even third language.
• We have bi-weekly themes.
• We are open from Monday to Thursday, 9:30am to 2pm. Aftercare is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2-4pm. On Fridays we are welcoming families with their babies and toddlers to the mom-and-me-group (Mein-Kind-und-ich, Group A 9-10am and Group B 10:30-11:30pm). On Wednesdays we are offering a “Deutschstunde” – a German class for elementary and middle school children (4:30-5:30pm).
• Drop-ins are possible when open spots are available.
• All served food is 99% organic and included in the tuition.
• We are out in fresh air every day, rain or shine.
• Our library consists of over 100 German books.

Katrin Staugaard, director and teacher, has been an early childhood educator since 2010. She was born and raised in Berlin, Germany and earned her early childhood education degree at Foothill College. As well as her passion for teaching, Katrin has a dance background and shares her love of dance with the children, using rhythm and dance in the classroom at all times. Her goal is to provide a small, warm, intimate, and nurturing environment for children. She continues to learn and finds inspiration in various philosophies and teaching practices, especially the warm and embracing Waldorf practices, but her biggest inspiration has always been the children. She finds joy in each day with the kids and is honored to be a part of their unique paths of learning and exploration. She strives to have a classroom that is alive, always growing and changing to reflect the children. Katrin loves to take the children outside everyday and explore, jump, skip and dig in her activity wonder backyard or/and go for walks in the beautiful Irvington neighborhood. She is registered at the 8.5 level in the ORO system. Katrin worked in the German Saturday School in Menlo Park (GASPA) and in the Alto School (German/American) before opening Brown Bear Care. She also teaches German in Shining Star Waldorf School here in Portland.
